On Roberto Clemente Day, the honor to wear number 21 extends beyond the Pittsburgh Pirates to a wider group. All Puerto Rican players in Major League Baseball are allowed to wear No. 21 in honor of Clemente. Additionally, all uniformed personnel of Puerto Rican descent, all nominees and previous recipients of the Roberto Clemente Award, and even any player regardless of heritage who requests it with sufficient notice can wear No. 21 on this day. All MLB players, managers, and coaches wear a No. 21 patch to commemorate Clemente’s legacy.
