Cuba was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage to the Americas in 1492. He arrived at the island on October 27, 1492, and landed on October 28, 1492. Columbus claimed the island for Spain and initially named it "Isla Juana" after Prince John, son of Queen Isabella. The island was inhabited by the indigenous Taíno and Guanajatabey peoples before Columbus' arrival.
