The electron was discovered by the British physicist Sir Joseph John "J. J." Thomson in 1897. He conducted experiments with cathode rays and showed that these rays were composed of previously unknown negatively charged particles, which he called "corpuscles." These particles were later called electrons. Thomson's work demonstrated that electrons were much smaller than atoms and had a very large charge-to-mass ratio, establishing them as fundamental subatomic particles present in all atoms.
