Ernest Rutherford is credited with discovering the atomic nucleus, based on his 1911 gold foil experiment in which he and colleagues observed that most alpha particles passed through a thin gold foil while a small fraction were deflected at large angles or backscattered. This led to the conclusion that a tiny, dense, positively charged region—the nucleus—centers each atom, with electrons occupying the surrounding space.
