Veterans Day honors all people who have served in the United States armed forces, living or deceased. It is not limited to those who died in combat or to a single conflict; rather, it recognizes the service and sacrifice of veterans across all branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force) and across peacetime and war. The holiday traces its origins to Armistice Day after World War I and was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to acknowledge all who have served.
