Dynamite was invented by the Swedish chemist and engineer Alfred Nobel. He invented it in 1866 and patented it in 1867. Nobel created dynamite by stabilizing nitroglycerin with an absorbent substance (diatomaceous earth), which made it safer to handle and transport as an explosive. The invention rapidly found widespread use as a powerful and safer alternative to black powder explosives.
