Poutine was invented in rural Quebec in the late 1950s, but its exact origin is debated with two main stories. One widely told version credits Fernand Lachance, owner of the restaurant Le Lutin qui rit in Warwick, who in 1957, when asked by a customer to mix cheese curds with fries, exclaimed "ça va faire une maudite poutine!" which means "that will make a damn mess" in Quebec slang.
