The first mechanical computer was invented by Charles Babbage, an English mathematician and inventor. He designed the Difference Engine in 1822, which was the first mechanical computer intended to automatically calculate polynomial functions using the method of finite differences. Though the machine was never fully completed during his lifetime, Babbage is credited as the inventor of the first mechanical computer. He later conceived the Analytical Engine, a more advanced design considered to be the first general- purpose mechanical computer.
