The kickflip was invented by Rodney Mullen in 1982. He initially called it the "Ollie Flip," and the name "Magic Flip" was popularized by other skaters who couldn't figure out how he flipped the board. This trick was revolutionary because it involved the rider kicking the skateboard to flip it 360° along its axis, and then catching it to land, separating the board and rider before reuniting in the trick. Rodney Mullen is credited with creating many foundational modern skateboarding tricks, and the kickflip is one of his most iconic inventions.
