Cody Balmer is a 38-year-old man from Pennsylvania who pleaded guilty to attempted murder, aggravated arson, burglary, terrorism, and other charges for setting fire to the Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's residence in April 2025. He climbed over a security fence, used Molotov cocktails made from gasoline in beer bottles to ignite the governor's mansion while Shapiro and his family were inside, causing millions of dollars in damage. Balmer admitted he had planned to physically assault Governor Shapiro with a sledgehammer if confronted. He was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison and will be eligible for parole in 2050. Balmer has a history of mental illness, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, and had prior legal and personal struggles. The attack happened on the second day of Passover, shortly after the governor's family held a Seder meal at the residence.
