James Brien Comey Jr. is an American lawyer who served as the seventh director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from 2013 until his dismissal in May 2017 by President Donald Trump. His career includes serving as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, deputy attorney general, and later holding senior roles in corporate legal positions. He became well-known for overseeing the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, a role that was highly controversial and part of the reason for his firing. Comey was born on December 14, 1960, in Yonkers, New York, and has a legal education from the University of Chicago Law School.

He has also been noted for his involvement in high-profile cases such as prosecuting Martha Stewart and investigating CIA Director David Petraeus for leaking classified information. After leaving the FBI, Comey authored books including “A Higher Loyalty”.

Recently, as of September 2025, there have been reports about a potential indictment against Comey in federal court related to his testimony before Congress.
