Peter Lalor was an Irish-born Australian leader of the 1854 gold miners' uprising known as the Eureka Stockade in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, which is considered one of the most celebrated rebellions in Australian history. Born on February 5, 1827, in Tinakill, Queen’s County, Ireland, Lalor trained as a civil engineer and migrated to Australia during the Victorian gold rush. He became the leader of the miners protesting against high license fees and police mistreatment. During the Eureka Stockade battle on December 3, 1854, Lalor was wounded and lost an arm. After the rebellion, he went on to have a significant political career, serving in the Victoria Legislative Council and various government roles until his death in 1889 in Melbourne.
