Tom Steyer is an American entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist, and political activist known for his work in climate advocacy and progressive politics. He founded Farallon Capital Management, a prominent hedge fund, before shifting his focus to environmental and political initiatives. Steyer launched NextGen Climate (later rebranded as NextGen America) to mobilize support for climate action and progressive policies, and he sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 before suspending his campaign. In 2021 he co-founded Galvanize Climate Solutions, a climate-focused investment firm, and has been involved in philanthropic and public policy efforts related to clean energy and environmental protection. He and his wife Kat Taylor have four children and have been active donors and advocates in California and national climate initiatives.
