Osama bin Laden was killed by the United States Navy SEALs, specifically a team from SEAL Team Six (also known as DevGru), during Operation Neptune Spear on May 2, 2011. The raid took place in his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Bin Laden was shot during the raid, with multiple accounts identifying former Navy SEAL Robert J. O'Neill as the one who fired the shots that killed him.
The operation was led by the CIA with coordination from the Joint Special Operations Command, involving around two dozen Navy SEALs. After the raid, bin Laden’s body was taken for identification and then buried at sea. The killing was authorized by then-President Barack Obama, who announced the operation’s success in the White House Situation Room.
While Robert O’Neill publicly claims to have killed bin Laden by shooting him three times in the head, other accounts about the exact sequence of events vary between the participating SEALs. However, it is generally agreed that bin Laden was killed by the SEALs during that raid.
