Takis were invented in Mexico in 1999 and are produced by Barcel, a subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo since 2019. The snack was created by Barcel, with businessman Manuel Hernández-Pons Torres credited as the brainchild behind Takis. Originally, Takis were aimed at the Latin American market but have since become popular worldwide. The distinctive rolled corn tortilla chips are flavored with intense spicy seasoning, with the most popular flavor being chili-lime "Fuego." Barcel USA received a Nielsen U.S. Breakthrough Innovation Award in 2014 for Takis' success and innovation.
