Tidal is majority-owned by Block, Inc., the financial technology company led by Jack Dorsey (formerly known as Square).

Current ownership

Block acquired a controlling, majority stake in Tidal in 2021, paying around 297–300 million dollars in cash and stock. Jay‑Z and other artists who originally bought and relaunched Tidal remain minority shareholders and Jay‑Z holds a seat on Block’s board in connection with the deal.

Brief ownership history

Tidal was originally launched by Norwegian company Aspiro and then acquired in 2015 by Jay‑Z’s Project Panther Bidco, which turned it into an artist-owned platform with stakes for several major musicians. In March 2021, Block (then Square) agreed to buy majority ownership, and by 2022 disclosed that it owned roughly 86–87% of Tidal’s parent company.
