The Mona Lisa was painted by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. He began the painting around 1503 and continued working on it intermittently until about 1517. The painting depicts Lisa del Giocondo, the wife of a wealthy Florentine merchant, and is considered a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance. It is an oil painting on a poplar panel and is now housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris
