Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778), also known after ennoblement as Carl von Linné, was a Swedish biologist, physician, and botanist. He is best known as the "father of modern taxonomy" for formalizing the system of binomial nomenclature, the method of naming species with two Latin names (genus and species). Linnaeus made foundational contributions to the classification and naming of plants, animals, and minerals, greatly influencing biology and ecology. Born in southern Sweden, he studied medicine initially but became deeply involved in natural science and botany. He published major works including "Systema Naturae" and "Species Plantarum," which classified thousands of species in an organized system. Linnaeus was a professor at Uppsala University, where he trained many students who spread his classification system globally. He was also appointed chief royal physician in Sweden and was ennobled in 1761. Linnaeus's legacy remains central to biological classification used today, and he pioneered ideas about relationships between organisms and their environment.
