St. Andrew was a Christian Apostle, famously known as the first disciple called by Jesus Christ. Born in Bethsaida in Galilee, Israel, he was a fisherman by trade and the older brother of St. Peter. He is most notable for being among Jesus’ twelve apostles and for his missionary work spreading Jesus’ teachings, particularly around the Black Sea and Greece. Andrew was martyred by crucifixion in Patras, Greece, around 60 AD, and according to tradition, he was crucified on an X-shaped cross, now known as Saint Andrew's Cross. This distinctive cross is also featured on the flag of Scotland, where he is the patron saint despite never having visited the country. Besides Scotland, he is the patron saint of several other countries including Romania, Russia, Ukraine, and Barbados. His feast day is celebrated on November 30.
