The first person to receive the Khel Ratna Award was chess Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand. He was honored for his outstanding performance in the year 1991-1992, when the award was instituted under the name Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (now officially Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award).
