The first president of the Indian National Congress was Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee (also spelled Womesh Chunder Bonnerjee or Umesh Chandra Banerjee). He presided over the inaugural session of the Congress held in Bombay in December 1885
. Bonnerjee was an Indian barrister and one of the founders of the Congress. He also served as president again in 1892 at Allahabad
. The Indian National Congress was founded in 1885, initiated by Allan Octavian Hume, and Bonnerjee was chosen as its first president at the first session attended by 72 members
