The first queen to rule England in her own right was Mary I, also known as Mary Tudor or "Bloody Mary." She reigned from 1553 to 1558, succeeding her half-brother Edward VI. Mary I was the daughter of King Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. She is known for her efforts to restore Roman Catholicism in England and for the persecution of Protestants during her reign.
