What is known

Multiple law-enforcement agencies and later DNA testing have never produced conclusive proof tying any suspect to the Zodiac murders, so the case remains officially unsolved. Several men, such as Arthur Leigh Allen and more recently Gary Francis Poste, have been proposed by writers or private groups, but authorities have not confirmed any of them as the Zodiac.

Why there is no confirmed name

The killer’s letters and ciphers, along with limited physical evidence from the crime scenes, have not yielded a definitive match to any suspect, even with modern forensic methods. Because of this lack of conclusive evidence, investigators and reference works still describe the Zodiac as an unidentified American serial killer, and no legal or official body has named a person as the Zodiac Killer.
