Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced that she will resign her U.S. House seat effective January 5, 2026, and no replacement has been selected yet. Her successor will be determined through a special election called by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, followed by the regular 2026 primary and general elections for the next full term.

Greene’s resignation

Greene stated on November 21, 2025, that she intends to step down from Congress, making January 5, 2026 her last day in office. Her northwest Georgia district is considered safely Republican, but the seat will be vacant until a successor is elected.

How replacement will be chosen

Under Georgia law, the governor will call a special election to fill the remainder of Greene’s term once her resignation takes effect. In addition, there will be the usual party primaries in May 2026 and a November 2026 general election to decide who holds the seat for the term beginning in 2027.

What is known so far

As of now, no winner is known because the special election has not yet been scheduled or held, and potential candidates are only beginning to be discussed publicly. Until then, the only certainty is that the seat will remain Republican-leaning, but exactly who will replace Greene is still undecided.
