Zohran Mamdani won the 2025 New York City mayoral election, becoming the city's mayor-elect. He defeated former governor Andrew Cuomo (who ran as an independent) and secured a historic victory as the first Muslim mayor and the youngest to hold the office in many decades. Adams had initially sought a second term but withdrew from the race, and Cuomo's primary loss to Mamdani led to his independent candidacy in the general election. Mamdani assumed office on January 1, 2026.
