The faces carved on Mount Rushmore are those of four U.S. presidents:
- George Washington, the first President, representing the birth of the nation.
- Thomas Jefferson, the third President, symbolizing the expansion of the country.
- Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President, embodying the development of the United States.
- Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President, representing the preservation of the nation during the Civil War.
These 60-foot-tall sculptures were created by Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln Borglum between 1927 and 1941 in the Black Hills of South Dakota
