Bleeding after sex can occur for several reasons, most commonly related to the cervix or vaginal tissues. Common causes include irritation or infection of the cervix (cervicitis), which could be due to sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia or gonorrhea, or other infections such as yeast infections. Cervical polyps, which are usually benign growths on the cervix, can also cause bleeding. Other factors include vaginal dryness or insufficient lubrication, cervical ectropion (where inner cervical cells grow on the outer cervix surface), genital sores, uterine prolapse, hormonal birth control effects, injury or trauma, and in rare cases, precancerous or cancerous changes in the cervix, vagina, or uterus. Rough or vigorous sex causing vaginal tearing may also lead to bleeding after intercourse.
