Cats are generally afraid of water mainly because of their evolutionary background and the physical discomfort water causes their fur. Domestic cats evolved in dry climates with little exposure to large bodies of water, so they are not accustomed to it. Additionally, their fur absorbs water, becoming heavy, cold, and uncomfortable, which reduces their agility and makes them feel vulnerable to predators. Cats also spend a lot of time grooming themselves, and wet fur interferes with this grooming and takes a long time to dry. Furthermore, cats have a highly sensitive sense of smell, and they can detect chemicals like chlorine in tap water, which can be off-putting for them. Negative past experiences with water, such as accidental immersion or forced baths, can also increase their fear. However, some cat breeds like the Maine Coon and Turkish Van have water-resistant fur and are more comfortable with water or even enjoy swimming.
