The concept of MNF doubleheaders began back in 2006, with the idea of airing one game primarily for East Coast viewers and another for West Coast viewers. This year, in the 2025 NFL season, four such MNF doubleheaders are scheduled, with the games spaced out by about three hours to avoid overlap. One game is usually on ABC and ESPN, while the other airs exclusively on ESPN. So, the reason for two MNF games is the NFL's expanded TV rights deal allowing more games to be broadcast in prime time, spreading the excitement and coverage across different time zones on the same night.
