Mormons (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) are prohibited from drinking coffee because of a health code called the "Word of Wisdom," which was revealed to the church's founder, Joseph Smith, in 1833. The Word of Wisdom advises against consuming "hot drinks," which has been interpreted by church leaders to mean coffee and tea. This code promotes abstinence from substances that harm the body or mind, including alcohol, tobacco, and addictive or mind-altering substances. Coffee is seen as contrary to spiritual and physical health, and faithful Mormons avoid it to maintain their spiritual journey and health commitments. Drinking coffee can disqualify members from certain church privileges, such as participating in temple ceremonies. However, Mormons are allowed to drink some caffeine-containing beverages like soda, and other hot drinks such as hot chocolate and herbal tea are permitted.
