Eddie Jones left his role as England rugby head coach because he was sacked by the Rugby Football Union (RFU) following a poor run of results in 2022. Despite having the highest win percentage of any England men's rugby coach and winning three Six Nations Championships, his team had their worst year since 2008, winning only five out of 12 Tests and performing badly in the Autumn Nations Series. Pressure had been mounting since England's 2019 Rugby World Cup final defeat, and after a review of the team's autumn campaign, the RFU decided to end his contract nine months before the 2023 World Cup. Jones himself acknowledged a difference of opinion with the RFU and said he did not want to continue without their full support. The decision was seen as a move to take action before the World Cup to enable a change in leadership.
