Terry Fox ran to raise money and create awareness for cancer research. After losing his right leg to osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) at age 18, he was deeply moved by the suffering of other cancer patients, especially children, that he saw during his hospital treatment. Motivated by a determination to bring an end to the suffering caused by cancer, Terry set out on a cross- Canada run called the "Marathon of Hope" in 1980, aiming to raise one dollar from each Canadian to fund cancer research. His run was not for fame but to inspire change and fund a cure for all cancers. He ran close to 42 kilometers (26 miles) every day, through tough weather and physical pain, to unite Canadians in support of cancer research before he was forced to stop due to the return of cancer in his lungs. His effort has since raised hundreds of millions for cancer research and continues through the annual Terry Fox Run worldwide.
