We need minerals because they are essential nutrients that perform a wide range of critical functions in the human body. Minerals help build strong bones and teeth (mainly calcium), carry oxygen in the blood (iron in hemoglobin), regulate muscle and nerve function, maintain fluid balance, and support enzyme and hormone production. For example, sodium, potassium, and chloride act as electrolytes to maintain water balance and proper pressure in and around cells. Minerals also contribute to acid-base balance, energy release from food, immune system functioning, and overall cell protection. Without sufficient minerals, the body cannot carry out these vital processes, leading to health problems such as anemia, weak bones, muscle issues, and impaired immune response. A balanced diet usually provides the necessary minerals, but supplementation may be required in certain cases like chronic illnesses or dietary restrictions.
