Annabeth’s past trauma

Annabeth was once attacked by a Cyclops while traveling with Thalia and Luke, and that encounter ended with Thalia’s apparent death at the border of Camp Half-Blood. Because of that, she grows up seeing Cyclopes as cruel monsters that trick demigods and then kill them, so Tyson being revealed as a Cyclops immediately triggers her fear and anger. Her initial coldness is less about Tyson personally and more about reliving that old trauma whenever she looks at him.

Why she treats Tyson badly at first

When Annabeth meets Tyson in “The Sea of Monsters,” she is suspicious because he is a Cyclops standing very close to Percy, someone she feels protective of. She assumes his kindness might be a trick the way other Cyclopes have used deception before, so she keeps her distance and makes hurtful comments instead of trusting him. This comes across as prejudice because Tyson has not actually done anything to deserve her rudeness yet.

How her feelings change

As they go on the quest, Annabeth sees Tyson repeatedly risk his life for Percy and for their mission, which forces her to rethink her assumptions about Cyclopes. By the end of the book she acknowledges that she misjudged him and even credits Tyson as the real hero of their quest, showing a shift from fear to respect. In later books she and Tyson are described as friends, and she eventually treats him like part of the family rather than someone she “hates.”
