The ear keeps popping because of changes in air pressure around the ear and the function of the Eustachian tube. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the nose and throat, equalizing air pressure on both sides of the eardrum. When there is a difference in pressure, such as during airplane travel, driving through mountains, or changes in elevation, the tube opens to release or allow air in, causing the popping sensation as pressure equalizes. Other causes of frequent ear popping include nasal congestion, colds, allergies, sinus infections, or Eustachian tube dysfunction, where the tube is blocked or does not open properly. This can lead to symptoms such as ear fullness, muffled hearing, or discomfort. Sometimes earwax buildup or temporomandibular joint disorders (jaw problems) can also result in popping or crackling sounds in the ear. Generally, ear popping is normal and helps protect the ear, but persistent or painful popping may require medical advice.
