Everyone is wearing the number 21 today to honor Roberto Clemente on Roberto Clemente Day, which is observed by Major League Baseball (MLB) on or around September 15th each year. On this day, all MLB players, managers, coaches, and umpires wear a "21" patch on their uniforms to commemorate Clemente's legacy. Additionally, players of Puerto Rican heritage, past Roberto Clemente Award recipients, and the clubs' nominees for the award have the option to wear the number 21 jersey during games on this day. Roberto Clemente was a legendary Puerto Rican Hall of Famer who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was the first Latin American player to reach 3,000 hits and was known not only for his outstanding baseball career but also for his humanitarian efforts. Clemente tragically died in a plane crash in 1972 while delivering earthquake relief supplies to Nicaragua. MLB celebrates his life and contributions annually with various events and symbolic gestures, including the widespread wearing of the number 21.
