OU is wearing its “Unity” jerseys to promote a message of togetherness and to honor former running back Prentice Gautt, the first Black scholarship football player at Oklahoma.
Meaning of the Unity jerseys
The anthracite (dark gray) uniforms with crimson accents replace players’ last names on the back with the word “UNITY,” and include the word “TOGETHER” on the collar to emphasize team and community cohesion. The concept and design were developed by a group of OU student‑athletes who wanted the uniforms to symbolize building relationships and a more inclusive society.
Why OU wears them in games
OU typically wears the Unity uniforms once per season as a special alternate, often tied to themed games such as honoring Prentice Gautt or broader appreciation/awareness events. The athletic department has also extended the Unity concept to other varsity sports, using the jerseys as a visible statement of the program’s values around unity and equality.
