Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth because Booth strongly opposed Lincoln's policies, especially those related to the abolition of slavery and the emancipation of enslaved people. Booth, a Confederate sympathizer and supporter of the South's slave-based economy, viewed Lincoln as a tyrant who needed to be stopped. Lincoln's actions during the Civil War, including the Emancipation Proclamation and pushing for the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery, enraged Booth. Initially, Booth planned to kidnap Lincoln to save the Confederacy but, after the Confederate surrender, he shifted to assassinating the president. He believed that killing Lincoln and other key government officials would revive the Confederate cause. Booth assassinated Lincoln on April 14, 1865, at Ford's Theatre, shooting him in the head; Lincoln died the next morning.
