Black History Month was created to recognize and honor the contributions and achievements of African Americans, which had been largely neglected and underrepresented in mainstream history and education. The origin dates back to 1915 when historian Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. In 1926, this group established Negro History Week in February to educate the public about Black history and associated the timing with the birthdays of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln. This week aimed to address the lack of information and highlight Black accomplishments. Over time, driven by the civil rights movement and growing awareness, Negro History Week expanded into Black History Month in 1976, officially recognized by President Gerald Ford to honor the often overlooked achievements of Black Americans across all fields. The observance promotes a deeper understanding and ongoing celebration of Black history and culture today.
