Bill Clinton was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives in December 1998 on two charges: perjury and obstruction of justice. The charges arose from his sworn testimony about his sexual relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky during a civil lawsuit filed by Paula Jones, and from actions related to concealing or manipulating witnesses during the investigation. He was acquitted by the Senate in February 1999 and remained in office.
