Daniel Khalife was put in prison because he was convicted of espionage and terrorism offences. Specifically, he was a former British soldier who passed sensitive military information, including details about special forces personnel, to Iranian agents over a period of more than two years. He was also sentenced for escaping from prison while awaiting trial by hiding under a food delivery truck, which led to a nationwide manhunt. Khalife was sentenced to 14 years and three months in prison for these crimes, which were judged to violate the Official Secrets Act and the Terrorism Act. The court described him as a "dangerous fool" who repeatedly violated his oath of service to the UK, motivated by a desire for notoriety and acting against national security interests.
