Richard Nixon was impeached by the House of Representatives but resigned before the full Senate could vote on impeachment. The House Judiciary Committee approved three articles of impeachment related to Watergate: obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of Congress for resisting the investigation and withholding evidence. Facing likely conviction in the Senate, Nixon chose to resign on August 8–9, 1974, making him the only U.S. president to resign from office.
