Cane toads were introduced to Australia in 1935 to control native cane beetles that were damaging sugar cane crops in Queensland. The idea was that cane toads, which were known to consume beetle larvae in other places, would reduce the cane beetle population and protect the cane industry. However, no thorough study was conducted beforehand to confirm whether cane toads would actually eat the cane beetles or to assess their ecological impact. The toads proved ineffective in controlling the beetles and instead became an invasive pest themselves, spreading widely and causing harm to native wildlife because of their toxic glands and aggressive behavior.
