Workplace labels are required in the following situations:

  • When a hazardous product is produced (made) at the workplace and used there.
  • When a hazardous product is decanted (transferred or poured) into another container.
  • When a supplier label becomes lost or illegible on a hazardous product container.

There are exceptions to these requirements:

  • If the product is poured into a container and is going to be used immediately by the same person who poured it.
  • If the product remains under the control of the person who decanted it and is used during one shift only, in which case only the product identifier (name) needs to be on the container but a full workplace label is not required.

In all other cases, especially if the product is kept for more than one day or shared among multiple users, a full workplace label is necessary. Workplace labels must include the product name and safe handling information and may reference the safety data sheet (SDS) if available. These rules help ensure safe handling and use of hazardous products in the workplace and are regulated by local jurisdictional laws such as WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) in Canada.
