Basketball was created in December 1891 by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts. He invented the game to keep young athletes active indoors during the winter. The first game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets as goals, which were nailed to a balcony ten feet above the floor. Naismith also published the original 13 rules for the game at that time.
