An anti-suicide vest, also known as an anti-suicide smock or suicide gown, is a tear-resistant, single-piece outer garment used primarily in prisons, hospitals, and mental health facilities to prevent individuals from using clothing to harm themselves, especially by hanging. The vest is made from heavy, quilted, and stiff materials that cannot be torn, folded, or rolled tightly enough to create nooses or ligatures. It has no buttons, zippers, cords, or other features that could be used for self-harm and typically fastens with strong Velcro strips. The design emphasizes safety, preventing the wearer from forming a noose while maintaining modesty and warmth without restricting movement. It is worn without other clothing to minimize risks, and due to its durable and tear-resistant construction, it cannot be used as a weapon or tool for suicide.
