Arthur Leigh Allen (December 18, 1933 – August 26, 1992) was an American teacher and convicted child molester who is best known as the only publicly named suspect in the Zodiac Killer case. He was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and spent much of his life in California. Allen was interviewed by police multiple times during the Zodiac investigation, faced several search warrants over two decades, and was considered by some investigators and authors as a likely suspect. Allen had a troubled background including a conviction for child molestation in the mid-1970s. He was also reportedly known to have expressed a desire to kill people and used the name "Zodiac" according to a former friend. Despite this, forensic evidence and police investigation ultimately did not conclusively link him to the Zodiac crimes, with some key evidence turning negative or inconclusive. He was identified by a shooting victim as the man who shot him, but other eyewitness descriptions did not match Allen's appearance well. Allen died of a heart attack in 1992, and after his death, police continued searches of his properties. He remains a controversial figure in the Zodiac case, with some believing he was the killer and others doubting his culpability. In media, he has been portrayed in films and documentaries exploring the Zodiac Killer mystery and his suspected role in the killings.
