Homologous chromosomes are separated during meiosis I, specifically in anaphase I. During this stage, paired homologues are pulled to opposite poles, while the sister chromatids of each chromosome remain attached and do not separate until meiosis II. This separation of homologous chromosomes reduces the chromosome number by half and is followed by telophase I and cytokinesis, after which meiosis II proceeds to separate sister chromatids.
