Wolves are generally quite large animals. Adult wolves typically measure between about 105 cm and 160 cm (around 3.5 to 5.2 feet) in length and stand about 66 to 84 cm (approximately 26 to 33 inches) tall at the shoulder. Their weight usually ranges from 40 kg to 79 kg (88 to 174 pounds), with some exceptional individuals reaching up to 79.4 kg (175 pounds). The largest species, such as the Mackenzie Valley wolf or Canadian timber wolf, can be as long as 2.1 meters (around 6.9 feet) including the tail, and weigh between 45 to 80 kg (99 to 176 pounds). Female wolves tend to weigh less than males, typically by 5-10 pounds. Wolves are significantly larger than most domestic dogs but smaller than large big cats like lions.
