Polar bears are among the most dangerous bear species in the world, considered the most dangerous bear overall due to their size, strength, and predatory behavior towards humans. They are apex predators with no natural enemies and can stand up to 10 feet tall, weighing over 1,700 pounds. Their bite force is extremely powerful at around 1,200 psi. Unlike other bears, polar bears may attack humans not only out of defense but also as prey, especially if they are hungry or food is scarce. They have been known to stalk humans similarly to how they hunt seals. While attacks are relatively rare due to polar bears living in remote Arctic regions, they are lethal and often fatal when they occur. Since 1870, there have been about 73 confirmed polar bear attacks worldwide resulting in 20 deaths. These bears pose a major risk to human safety in Arctic areas, and encounters require caution and often armed protection for people in polar bear country. Nutritionally stressed adult male polar bears are most likely to attack humans. Efforts are ongoing to manage human-polar bear conflicts safely.
